Leaders in Cold Climate Innovation
Yukon Cold Climate Innovation Centre (YCCIC) is a partnership between applied researchers, industry and government dedicated to developing, commercializing and exporting sustainable cold climate technologies. We facilitate collaboration between scientific researchers and businesses with the goal of creating commercial solutions that address cold climate issues.
Located at the Whitehorse campus of Yukon College, YCCIC provides workspace, resources, institutional facilities and strategic partnerships to cold climate innovators and the centre serves as a nucleus for cold climate entrepreneurship. YCCIC is a gateway for applied research in the circumpolar North, offering proximity to research stations and testing sites as well as the services and amenities necessary for conducting research programs.

YCCIC’s Research Edge
YCCIC is located in close proximity to excellent testing ground for cold climate technologies and products. Yukon winters are predictably cold and dry, and freezing conditions persist for over half the year in parts of the territory. Yukon’s geography and infrastructure offer outstanding opportunities for cold climate experimentation, field trials and research programs.
YCCIC activities focus on applied cold climate research with strong commercial prospects. There is a demonstrated need for new technologies to address the special demands of cold climates, particularly in light of new stresses associated with climate change. Society also needs to find innovative ways of adapting existing technologies and processes to the combined demands of northern climates and the modern world. Both needs translate into substantial opportunities for innovative enterprises.
YCCIC activities focus on three areas:
- Infrastructure (buildings, water, sewer, heat and power, waste, roads)
- Housing construction and maintenance
- Geotechnical works (infrastructure challenges relating to cold climate factors like permafrost)
