Using steam to extract gold

Yukon’s mining industry has a long tradition of adapting technologies to operate in a cold climate. To mine through the winter or work in permafrost-affected areas, Klondike Gold Rush-era placer miners thawed the ground using fires. Miner Clarence Berry discovered that steam was more effective at thawing the frozen muck, resulting in a threefold increase in the rate they could process pay dirt. more
